## 1. Why This Practice Project Is the Perfect Training Ground

Before making a single cut on your 4' × 8' maple dollhouse sheet, building this small **6" × 8" garden tool shed** lets you calibrate your tools, test your fence settings, and dial in muscle memory with **zero financial or project risk**:

1. **Exercises 100% of the Dollhouse Techniques**:
   - **Straight Rip & Cross-Cuts**: Sizing small rectangular blanks accurately.
   - **1/8" (0.125") Deep Grooves (Dados)**: Floor and wall channels for interlocking panels.
   - **1/4" Wide × 1/8" Deep Edge Rabbets**: Corner joints with self-squaring shoulders.
   - **Angled Gable Pitch Cuts**: Cutting peaked rooflines cleanly.
   - **Plunge / Piercing Cuts**: Jigsaw or scroll-saw window and door openings.
2. **Generous Safety Margin**:
   - All panels for this shed require only a **16" × 24"** piece of your 2' × 4' panel.
   - That leaves a massive **32" × 24" area of pure scrap wood** to test saw blade heights, router bits, and fence offsets!
3. **Double Benefit**:
   - If a test cut goes wrong, it's just a throwaway practice piece—adjust your fence and cut another one in 60 seconds!
   - If it turns out great, **you have a gorgeous miniature companion tool shed** to place right in the backyard of the dollhouse on the landscaped lawn plinth!

## 2. The 4 Pre-Flight Tool Calibration Drills (On Scrap Wood)

> [!IMPORTANT]
> **The Golden Rule of Miniature Joinery**:
> NEVER cut your final project panels until your scrap test joints slide together smoothly and stand square on their own!

Cut a 6" × 12" piece off your 2' × 4' panel to use as your **Calibration Test Board**. Perform these 4 quick drills:

### Drill 1: Dial in Dead-Exact 1/8" (0.125") Blade Height
* **Goal**: A groove that seats the 1/8" panel tongue while leaving exactly 1/8" of core plywood underneath.
* **Setup**:
  1. Unplug the table saw or router table.
  2. Use a brass setup block, depth gauge, or metal ruler to set the saw blade or router bit to **1/8" (0.125")** above the table surface.
  3. Lock the arbor or router collet.
* **Test Cut**: Run your test scrap board over the blade. Measure the groove depth with calipers or a ruler.
  - If deeper than 1/8": Lower slightly (too deep weakens 1/4" plywood).
  - If shallower than 1/8": Raise slightly (too shallow causes panels to bottom out before squaring).

---

### Drill 2: The Two-Pass 1/4" (0.250") Dado Width & "Thumb Pressure" Test
* **Goal**: A groove width that holds 1/4" plywood snugly without wobbling or binding.
* **Why Two Passes?**: Standard 10" table saw blades have an 1/8" (0.125") kerf. To cut a 1/4" (0.250") groove, you take two overlapping passes:
  1. **Pass 1**: Run scrap against rip fence at Fence Setting $F$.
  2. **Pass 2**: Nudge rip fence over by approximately 1/8" (0.125") and make the second pass.
* **The "Thumb Pressure" Test**:
  - Take a small offcut of your actual 1/4" plywood and insert its edge into the test groove.
  - **Ideal Fit**: The offcut slides into the channel with light thumb pressure and **stands upright on its own at 90° without falling over or wobbling**!
  - *If too loose*: Decrease the fence nudge on Pass 2.
  - *If too tight*: Increase the fence nudge by a hair (1/32").

---

### Drill 3: The 1/4" W × 1/8" D Edge Rabbet with a Sacrificial Sub-Fence
* **Goal**: Cutting clean 1/4" wide × 1/8" deep shoulders along the edges of side walls and decks.
* **Setup**:
  1. Clamp a straight scrap piece of 3/4" wood or MDF to your table saw rip fence (acting as an auxiliary sacrificial fence).
  2. Set blade height to exactly **1/8" (0.125")**.
  3. Slide the rip fence over until the outer teeth of the blade bury slightly into the sacrificial wood, leaving exactly **1/4" (0.250")** of blade kerf exposed between the blade and the fence face.
* **Test Cut**:
  - Lay scrap flat on the saw table with its edge against the fence.
  - Feed smoothly using a push block in a single pass.
  - *Result*: A perfect, razor-sharp 1/4" wide × 1/8" deep shoulder that completely conceals raw plywood edges!

### Drill 4: Plunge & Piercing Cuts for Windows and Doors
* **Goal**: Cutting clean, tearout-free rectangular holes inside a flat panel.
* **Procedure**:
  1. Mark window/door boundaries with a sharp 0.5mm mechanical pencil and square.
  2. Chuck a 3/8" brad-point bit into your drill.
  3. Drill a pilot hole inside two diagonal corners of the waste section (staying 1/16" away from the pencil lines).
  4. Insert a fine-tooth scroll-saw or jigsaw blade (10–14 TPI down-cutting wood blade) into the hole.
  5. Cut along the inside of the lines. Use a small flat needle file or 150-grit sanding stick to file dead-flat to the line.

                                                                                │
                                                                                ▼
[Phase 6: Roof Installation] <── [Phase 5: Potting Bench Slide-In] <── [Phase 4: Carcass Assembly]
```
### Phase 1: Break Down Rectangular Blanks
1. On your table saw, cut the rectangular blanks for `S1`, `S2-A`, `S2-B`, `S3`, `S4`, `S5-A`, and `S5-B`.
2. Mark the 3" peak on gables `S2-A` and `S2-B`:
   - Bottom width: 6.00". Center is at $Z = 3.00"$.
   - Mark eave line at $Y = 6.50"$ on both sides.
   - Mark peak apex at $Y = 9.50"$ at $Z = 3.00"$.
   - Draw diagonal lines from eave to peak. Cut with a miter gauge set to 45° or cleanly on a bandsaw/scroll saw.
### Phase 2: Route Dados & Rabbets (Flat on Bench!)
1. **Vertical Corner Rabbets**: On the inside front edge of `S2-A` and `S2-B`, cut a 1/4" W × 1/8" D rabbet from $Y = 0$ to $6-1/2"$.
2. **Bottom Deck Dados**: On inside bottom of `S2-A` and `S2-B`, cut a 1/4" W × 1/8" D dado from $Y = 0$ to $1/4"$.
3. **Interior Potting Bench Dados**: Cut a 1/4" W × 1/8" D horizontal dado across `S2-A` and `S2-B` at $Y = 2-1/2"$.
4. **Floor Deck End Rabbets**: On Floor Deck `S1`, cut 1/4" W × 1/8" D end rabbets on left and right ends.
### Phase 3: Pierce Door and Window
1. On Front Wall `S3`, mark the Shed Door ($2-1/2" \text{ W} \times 5-1/2" \text{ H}$) starting flush at the bottom edge.
2. Mark the 2" × 2" Window on the right side.
3. Drill corner pilot holes and cut out cleanly. Sand edges square.
### Phase 4: Dry-Fit & Glue Carcass
1. Test-fit `S1`, `S2-A`, `S2-B`, and `S3` without glue. Observe how the 1/8" shoulders pull the entire structure 90° square automatically!
2. Apply PVA wood glue into the bottom dados and front corner rabbets.
3. Assemble and clamp with two small bar clamps. Check diagonal corner-to-corner ($10.00"$).
### Phase 5: Slide in Potting Bench (`S4`)
1. Run a thin bead of glue into the side shelf dados at $Y = 2-1/2"$.
2. Slide potting bench `S4` in from the open rear. It locks the two gables together with immense structural rigidity!
### Phase 6: Install Roof Slopes
1. Glue Front Roof Slope `S5-A` across gables with uniform 1/2" overhangs.
2. Glue Rear Roof Slope `S5-B` to meet at the center ridge.
3. *(Optional)* Add small scrap strips to frame the door as a rustic batten door with a wooden latch!
